Define the work before the shortlist
List the drawings, models, calculations and downstream deliverables the software must produce. Separate essential workflows from desirable conveniences and identify any regulatory or client-mandated formats.
Test interoperability
Import and export representative files rather than relying on format lists. Check geometry, layers, properties, units, references and metadata after each exchange. Include legacy data and the largest realistic project.
Evaluate the whole operating model
Consider workstation requirements, identity management, offline access, collaboration, training, deployment, support and update policies. A lower licence price may not mean a lower total implementation cost.
Use a scored pilot
Give shortlisted products the same tasks and acceptance criteria. Record evidence, risks and unresolved questions. Confirm current pricing and terms with vendors before approval.
