Revit and AutoCAD Together: A Practical AEC Workflow

Assign model ownership

Revit and AutoCAD can coexist when teams define which system owns each deliverable. Avoid maintaining the same design information independently in two places without a controlled update process.

Prepare DWG references

Clean incoming drawings, confirm units and coordinates, and agree layer standards before linking or importing. Prefer links where continued updates are expected and document any conversion required for issue files.

Coordinate outputs

Test lineweights, fonts, hatches, title blocks and sheet references in both native and exported deliverables. Review consultant expectations early rather than waiting for a final issue.

Govern revisions

Use named exchange milestones, responsible owners and a clear archive structure. The workflow should make the current source obvious and prevent obsolete DWG files from circulating.
